Primary Resources English Comprehension

Reading and comprehension are two different but very closely linked skills. Primary resources English reading skills enable kids to translate text into spoken words and phrases. This skill puts them one step closer to accessing the infinite world of wonder that literature provides.

Learning KS1 reading comprehension and KS2 English comprehension skills enables kids to understand the meaning of what they read. Developing KS1 reading comprehension skills is essential for kids to understand children’s stories when they are still young. KS2 English comprehension skills also help them enjoy a rich reading experience. These reading skills provide a foundation for children to understand newspapers, books, and other more complex literature when they grow older.

Older kids usually read and understand simultaneously, but it’s often challenging for their younger siblings to make the connection. There is a wide variety of grade-appropriate primary resources reading material that you can use to help your child acquire these skills at an early age.

Good KS1 Comprehension and KS2 Comprehension Skills

Comprehension is not limited to having a large vocabulary or understanding the meaning of a large number of words and phrases. Good KS2 English comprehension skills enable kids to grasp the meaning of words and sentences based on the context of what they are reading. They can, therefore, help them understand what they are reading without necessarily knowing what every word they encounter means. For this to happen, however, you need to provide your child with books that are at the right level. Make sure your little one gets a lot of practice reading books that have at least 90% of words that they can recognise. If they stop too long to try and understand a word or phrase, it becomes difficult for them to focus on the overall meaning of the story.

Sometimes the text is spiced with idioms, figures of speech, and hidden meanings. Developing your kids’ KS2 comprehension skills also helps them understand some of the finer details and nuances of what they read. This helps them read between the lines and understand the complete sense of a story.

Schofield and Sims Comprehension and other Comprehension Activities

Schofield and Sims comprehension books are a great way to provide reading practice to your kids. These books offer a collection of stimulating texts in conjunction with questions that are essential in building your child’s comprehension skills as well as boosting their vocabulary. You can also supplement reading practice with other comprehension activities, such as KS1 comprehension worksheets, comprehension kits, comprehension cards, and memory games. These primary teaching resources are age-graded and will provide adequate challenge to your child’s comprehension skills, without overwhelming them.

Comprehension kits help kids become more confident by providing content and lessons that gradually become more challenging. These kits include reading comprehension cards, comprehension strategy teaching cards, answer cards, and a teacher resource book. Children can, therefore, apply different strategies to improve their comprehension skills before, during, and after reading. They also have interactive “your turn” comprehension activities that promote independence, as kids can use them on their own. After reading, kids assess how well they understood the text and use a different strategy to improve their understanding.

Another set of great KS2 comprehension tools you can use are Reading Comprehension Dice Cubes. These cubes are a very effective way to impart comprehension skills to your child in a natural, easy-going, fun-filled atmosphere. Children play with cubes in various dice games, and this familiarity creates a natural, entertaining, yet educational environment. The cubes have questions on each side, and they pose questions for kids to answer before, during and after reading. These questions include what the main ideas were, what lessons and new words they learnt, and which characters your kids can relate to and why.

Such questions probe and stimulate your children to think about and review the story that they are reading. This will, in turn, will allow you to assess how well they have understood the story. The dice cubes encourage literacy skills, build languages skills and stimulate independent thinking and prompt discussions. Besides boosting your child’s KS2 comprehension skills, Dice Cubes enable kids to take up a lot of knowledge without even knowing they are doing so.

KS1 Comprehension Worksheets and Comprehension Worksheets KS2

Worksheets are a simple and direct method of teaching kids good comprehension skills. Without such skills, your child will merely track words and phrases visually, without understanding what they mean. KS1 comprehension worksheets and comprehension worksheets KS2 teach your child to:

  • Identify what they know.
  • Be aware of what they don’t understand.
  • Learn how to solve their challenges with comprehension.

Free, printable comprehension worksheets are a great way to help your child improve at reading comprehension. Workbooks, however, provide a more systematic approach to teaching comprehension. They also make it easy for kids to go back and polish up and strengthen the skills they have already learnt.

KS2 Comprehension Cards

KS2 comprehension cards are essential primary resources in building and strengthening your child’s reading comprehension skills as well as their inference and analytical skills. Reading comprehension KS2cards provide simple but effective comprehension activities that are designed specifically for young readers.

The cards have passages based on fiction and non-fiction stories, as well as an image. Children read the passage and then answer multiple-choice questions on the other side of the card. The questions assess how much the child has grasped what they have read by focusing on the main idea, context clues, sequencing and drawing conclusions. Kids can always find new challenges as the comprehension activities increase in difficulty within the set. The cards are wipe-clean, so you can keep and use them to teach other kids in future.
