From 1890 to 1908, he worked in the statistics department of the London office of Anglo-American Oil. For the rest of his long life, he was a full-time writer. De la Mare\u2019s first collection of poetry, Songs of Childhood<\/i>, was published under pseudonym in 1902. With the publication of\u00a0The Listeners<\/i>\u00a0(1912) and the classic volume of children\u2019s poetry\u00a0Peacock Pie<\/i>\u00a0(1913), he established himself as one of the\u00a0leading poets of the time. In addition to publishing more than a thousand poems,\u00a0culminating with\u00a0The Traveller<\/em>\u00a0(1945) and\u00a0Winged Chariot<\/em>\u00a0(1951), considered by many\u00a0\u2013\u00a0among them T. S. Eliot, his editor at Faber\u00a0\u2013\u00a0to be his finest poems,\u00a0de la Mare published novels, including\u00a0Memoirs of a Midget<\/i>\u00a0(1921), short stories, drama, stories for children and literary criticism. He also edited celebrated anthologies, including\u00a0Come Hither<\/i>\u00a0(1923) and\u00a0Behold This Dreamer<\/i>\u00a0(1939).
