Phase 3 Phonics Worksheets

Few things are more satisfying than teaching children to read. Whether in a classroom or at home, developing literacy skills is crucial to childhood development. And, our Phase 3 phonic worksheets can be a fantastic aid in that quest.

By focusing on literacy through sounds, phonics resources are invaluable for presenting literacy in ways young minds can understand. Now widely taught at Key Stage 1, phonics also play a crucial part in the educational journey. To give children the best chance from an early age, teachers and parents should implement resources like these into daily teaching practices.

Understanding phonics

Before you can utilise our letter and sounds phase 3 worksheets, parents especially need to develop an understanding of phonics. These methods are widely used in schools now, but that’s only been the case since 2012. As such, many parents find that their children understand more than they do.

That’s no use, and it’s why understanding phonics is vital before implementing phonics play with your child. Luckily, once you start researching this topic, you should find it relatively simple to grasp.

Phonics is basically a simplified literacy break down in which words and language are split into two principal categories: a) Phonemes and b) Graphemes.

Phonemes are the smallest units of sound, aka the key letters in a word. Focusing on these helps children to link sounds to individual letters. Graphemes, meanwhile, are the symbols that represent themselves, aka the letters themselves.

A technique called decoding is used to help children recognise the sounds associated with those letters, while blending is then used to help children say whole words. Ideally, this technique should help children to write one grapheme for each of the 44 phonemes. That’s a goal that’s especially likely if you use resources like our phonics worksheets to enhance understanding.

The benefits of phonics

Phonics has many benefits and has been proven incredibly useful for helping children of all levels understand basic literacy. The prime benefits are reasonably evident once you understand the teaching method, but it’s still worth considering the boost that phonics can bring to literacy learning, including:

  • A firm grasp on key letters from an early age
  • Learning that’s accessible to children of different skill sets
  • Reliable DFE screening tests to verify learning
  • A simple way to make literacy fun

How you can teach phonics

Once you understand phonics, it’s vital to consider how you can teach it to your children. Or rather, how you can enhance your children’s growing understanding of the method. The good news is that there are a few different methods, and the best one has to be phonics games.

Phonics play phase 3 is the best way to engage children in this learning technique, and there are a few ways that you can implement this at home. Our phonics worksheets are, of course, an invaluable free resource, as are these free phonics flashcards. Either of these options can help to develop letter and sound phase 3 understanding, all while presenting phonics in a light and approachable way.

Once your child begins to grasp the basics, you could take phonics activities even further with any one of our alphabet phonics books. These take the fundamental lessons of worksheets and resources further to help develop an ongoing understanding of letters and literacy.

If you find that direct methods like these don’t work, it’s also worth considering incorporating phonics play into other, less obvious methods. As discussed in our blog, there are many ways to teach children to spell, including messy play and sensory toys. Each of these can enhance phonics teaching for even children who struggle to focus on written resources.
